The Rangers midfielder’s great form at Ibrox has earned him a Nigeria call up.
The 23-year-old could represent his declared international team against Ukraine in Dnipro next month. He’ll potentially line up alongside English Premier League stars such as Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho.
It’s a huge boost to the player who has had a pretty stellar summer since making the switch from Charlton Athletic to the Gers.
It was a move criticised at the time by former manager Lee Bowyer (talkSPORT), as well as this week by former Addicks boss Chris Powell (The Daily Record).
Both men feel he should have moved to the English Championship to further his career, but he chose to work under Steven Gerrard and represent Rangers.
Being called up to international duty is further vindication he’s made the right choice. Clearly playing at Rangers will not be a hindrance to his career ambitions.
His form shows he’s a happy man too. He’s scored three goals in his first seven matches this season and has a good chance of playing at UEFA Europa League level.
Aribo admitted he was delighted with the news, telling allnigeriasoccer.com: “I am very happy, it is a dream come true to receive the call-up.”
Although parting with players during international breaks is never ideal, it’s something that will only benefit Rangers in the long run too.
Not only will it give Aribo a big injection of confidence, but testing himself against international competition will aid his development and give him experience to aid the Rangers cause.
The midfielder will be hoping to impress further tonight when the Gers take on Danish side Midtjylland in European qualifying action.
