The Portuguese midfielder was offered a new contract by Liverpool but rejected it in favour of a return to his home country.
Liverpool midfielder Joao Teixeira has outlined his reason for turning down a new contract at Anfield to return to Portugal, saying that it has always been a dream of his to wear the blue and white shirt of Porto, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.
Teixeira joined the Reds from Sporting Lisbon four years ago but the 23-year-old’s move to England did not turn out to be a successful one as he made just eight competitive first-team appearances.
He did enjoy a successful season on loan at Championship side Brighton in 2014-15, but with his contract at Anfield expiring at the end of the month he has rejected the offer of a new deal in favour of a move back home.
The former Portugal youth international has outlined his reasoning for making the move, admitting that once he heard of the interest from Porto he never considered making any other move.
Teixeira said, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo: “I am from the north [of Portugal] and to wear blue and white has always been a dream for me.
“Now I can work at my club in my region and my country. I had other offers but do not want anything other than to wear blue and white.”
Teixeira becomes the latest player to depart Merseyside following the expiration of his contract, with veteran defender Kolo Toure and forgotten left-back Jose Enrique amongst those to be heading out the exit door.
