Joao Fonseca has quickly emerged as Brazil’s most exciting young tennis prospect.
That visibility has now extended into football discussions. With the 2026 World Cup approaching, debates around Brazil’s squad selection have intensified across the country.
Neymar’s situation has been a central topic. He has not featured for Brazil since suffering a knee injury in October 2023, and despite expectations of a return, he remains out amid injuries and Carlo Ancelotti’s technical decisions.
In that context, Fonseca has responded to whether he thinks the former Barcelona star should feature in the next World Cup.
Joao Fonseca backs Neymar World Cup call-up amid growing debate in Brazil

Speaking to ESPN Brazil, he expressed confidence in the national team’s chances while supporting Neymar’s inclusion, weighing in on one of Brazil’s most divisive football questions right now.
“I do believe that Brazil can have a good World Cup. It’s a very controversial question, but I am in favour of Neymar playing in the World Cup,” the 19-year-old said.
He pointed to Neymar’s experience as a key factor, despite acknowledging his limits in the debate.
“I think his career and experience will be an important factor. But, obviously, I’m not the biggest football expert, I can’t say anything definitive, it’s just my opinion,” he concluded.
The discussion comes at a crucial moment for Brazil. The final squad for the tournament will be announced on 16 May, just weeks before the World Cup begins in June.
