The former Sheffield Wednesday coach follows his fellow Portuguese, Jose Morais, to Barnsley.
Barnsley have confirmed the appointment as Joao Cunha as physical coach – two years after he left Sheffield Wednesday.
Cunha followed Carlos Carvalhal to Wednesday in July 2015, but left six months into his Hillsborough career citing personal reasons.
The Portuguese was replaced by Jhony Conceicao, who has since become part of Carvalhal’s staff at Swansea City.
Cunha’s appointment at Barnsley follows confirmation of Dimas’ arrival as assistant to new Tykes boss Jose Morais.
Morais, who worked as Jose Mourinho’s right-hand man at Porto, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Chelsea, was out of work after losing his job as manager of AEK Athens last year.
The 52-year-old had a similarly unsuccessful spell at Antalyaspor before then – although he did experience solo success with Esperance and Al-Shabab, of Tunisia and Saudi Arabia, respectively.
Barnsley, who previous boss Paul Heckingbottom, a former Sheffield Wednesday defender, to Leeds United last week, are 22nd in the Championship following a 1-1 draw against the Owls last Saturday.
