Jo-Wilfried Tsonga reveals Alexander Zverev’s calm approach ahead of the French Open Final

Alexander Zverev is preparing for the most important match of his career. He’s been here before, but this time, expectations are different. The 29-year-old has never been a stronger favourite than he is now.

Standing across from him will be Flavio Cobolli. While Cobolli has earned his place in the final, there’s a clear gap in experience and pedigree between the two players.

Tennis doesn’t always follow the script, though. We’ve seen Zverev struggle under pressure before, and finals bring their own kind of stress.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has had some insight into how Zverev is preparing for Sunday’s final against Flavio Cobolli, sharing what he learned from conversations with people close to the German camp.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga offers update on Zverev’s mindset ahead of French Open final

Tsonga spoke with Amazon Prime Video France, sharing what he had picked up from his interactions with Zverev’s team.

While the meeting happened before Zverev’s win over Mensik, the information still sheds light on the German’s approach as he aims to claim his first major title.

Tsonga said: “In any case, one thing is certain, he’s on a mission.”

“I ran into his team yesterday, and they told me he wasn’t leaving his [hotel] room, except for an hour or an hour and a half when he called his team, who had to be absolutely available to go eat and get a little fresh air.

“But the rest of the time, he’s focused on the objective.”

Statistical concerns facing Alexander Zverev ahead of the Roland Garros Final

While Zverev is understandably viewed as the favourite, given his clear edge over Cobolli in most areas, tennis often refuses to follow the script.

This tournament has already shown that expecting certainty in this sport is a mistake.

Still, there’s one statistic that could be hard for Zverev to ignore if it reaches his camp before Sunday’s final.

Bastien Fachan highlighted on X that each of Zverev’s last six defeats has been against Italian opponents, including one loss to Cobolli. Four of those losses were against Jannik Sinner, with Luciano Darderi also appearing on the list.
