New Celtic signing Boli Bolingoli’s error led to an opposition goal in the Hoops’ 2-1 Wednesday win.
The Hoops have progressed to the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League after a 5-2 aggregate win over the Bosnian outfit.
Bolingoli was eager to impress in his first competitive Celtic Park outing, moving forward into advanced positions regularly until his error allowed the visitors to equalise on the night midway through the second half.
Bonner believes the former Rapid Vienna man has something offer the Scottish champions, but reckons Lennon could look to address the defensive side of his game.
Speaking to BBC Scotland, the former goalkeeper said: “They might be disappointed that they gave away a silly goal, but Neil Lennon might use it as an opportunity to talk to Boli Bolingoli about the defensive side of the game.
“It was quite visible that he didn’t get forward as much after the goal.
“You can’t afford to give the ball away like that in Europe, but he’s an exciting prospect.”
In front of a big home crowd in Glasgow for the first time, Bolingoli can’t be judged too harshly for his error nor his enthusiasm in advancing up the pitch.
The left-back looked like he wanted a goal to really get his Celtic career off to a hot start, but it didn’t quite happen for him in the crucial moments and his slack pass that led to Sarajevo’s goal will have to go down as a learning experience.
As always with new signings patience must be given, although if Lennon can add a bit of defensive robustness to his game, then Celtic could have an exciting all-round wing-back on their hands.
