It has been a difficult day for Newcastle United after suffering a heavy defeat to Wolves in the Premier League Asia Trophy.

The Magpies struggled to have any real impact on the match and found themselves three goals down by the interval, with a raft of young players coming off the bench in the second half the only real positives to take from the encounter.

Steve Bruce was announced as the club’s new manager shortly before kick-off, although didn’t take charge, and it appears he has lots of work to do in order to get a squad ready for the challenges of the English Premier League next term.

One player singled out for criticism by supporters was Jonjo Shelvey, who looked particularly off the pace in the first half, before being hooked early in the second half.

The former Liverpool man had a difficult 2018/19 season at St James’ Park, managing to make just ten starts under Rafa Benitez last term.

Some fans aren’t holding out much hope he can offer anything more than that during the coming campaign after watching his display at the Nanjing Olympic Centre.

He’ll have his work cut out to prove to fans he can make a big impact next term, but does seem intent on securing a place in the first-team, stating definitively to the Evening Chronicle that he won’t be leaving St James’ Park any time soon.

His aim will now be getting up to full match fitness and finding some form under his new manager.
