Liverpool are yet to make any significant first-team signings this summer.

Speaking to ESPN, Liverpool legend Steve Nicol is feeling relaxed about the Anfield club’s transfer business so far this summer, despite making a “bad start” in signing Divock Origi up to a new long-term contract.

So far the Reds have only added teenage defender Sepp van den Berg to the squad, with Jurgen Klopp apparently in no rush to strengthen his Champions League winning team.

Nicol though is content with the situation, feeling the lack of signings elsewhere among the elite teams in England means there is no reason to panic quite yet.

Talking as a panel member on ESPN FC, Nicol said: “Right now I’m not concerned, no, I’m not. Had everybody else gone out and been spending money and bringing in players left, right and centre then yes.

“Then my argument would be ‘hold on, everybody else is going and strengthening’ but the truth is they’re not. Right now, because of where Liverpool are, it’s not a case of going out and just signing anybody.

“They have to be careful, they have to make sure they sign the right ones. Now I will say that I think they’ve made a bad start by re-signing Divock Origi. But no, I’m not panicking yet.”

With Alberto Moreno leaving to join Spanish club Villarreal, Liverpool need competent back-up for Andy Robertson at left-back, while strong attacking depth could also be needed if they plan to challenge across multiple competitions next term.

Liverpool may have just won the greatest prize in club football but fresh faces can provide the kind of spark and competition for places that even the best teams around need to maintain success.

Nicol is right to suggest there is plenty of time left to get the business they need done, but as time ticks closer to deadline day on August 8, the transfer market may get harder to navigate as teams lock in their squads for the challenges ahead.
