Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has criticised Ahmed Elmohamady’s defending during Aston Villa’s 3-2 defeat to Leeds United on Sunday by stating he was ‘annihilated’ by star man Jack Clarke.

After going into the halftime break with a two-goal lead, substitute Clarke was allowed to cut in onto his right-hand side by the fullback, with the young winger curling his effort into the bottom corner.

That strike after 56 minutes started the comeback for Marcelo Bielsa’s men, who levelled the scores five minutes later through Pontus Jansson and then a 95th-minute winner from Kemar Roofe.

After the match, former Chelsea striker Hasselbaink offered a scathing analysis of Elmohamady’s defending as Villa blew a two-goal lead in a crucial promotion encounter.

“Clarke [with a] beautiful one v one and he totally annihilates Elmohamady,” Hasslebaink told Sky Sports during their coverage of Aston Villa v Leeds on 23/12/2018 at 3:45 pm. “What Clarke does really well is he keeps the pitch really wide and then he makes his space.

“Elmohamady does this (allows him to cut onto his right side) totally wrong. But he’s [Clarke] picking his corner. What a finish – he [Elmohamady] doesn’t know if he’s going to go outside or in.”

Jack Clarke of Leeds United scores his sides first goal during the Sky Bet Championship match between Aston Villa and Leeds United at Villa Park on December 23, 2018 in Birmingham, England.

The defeat leaves Villa well and truly out of the automatic picture because they are now 15 points behind Championship leaders Leeds.

Dean Smith’s side are currently sitting 11th in the Championship table, five points behind the play-off places as they will be looking to crawl there way back up the table during the festive period.

Villa will be on the road on Boxing Day when they take on Swansea City before they round the year off by playing Preston North End at Deepdale.
