Jimmy Dunne spent the second-half of the season on loan at Sunderland as the Black Cats reached the League One play-off final.
Jimmy Dunne has sent a message to Sunderland fans on Twitter after his loan spell at the Stadium of Light ended with play-off heartbreak, with the defender apologising to the supporters over Jack Ross’ men failing to secure promotion.
Sunderland will spend another season in League One after an agonising last-minute defeat to Charlton in the play-off final at Wembley. The game had started in ideal fashion for the Black Cats as the Addicks produced an incredible own goal inside the first five minutes.
But Lee Bowyer’s men would be the ones to celebrate as Patrick Bauer scored a last-gasp winner. Sunderland fans will not need reminding that it was a hugely disappointing end to the season that has cost them an immediate return to the second tier.
Following their 2-1 win against Rochdale in April, Ross’ side were level on points with second place Barnsley, but had two games in hand. Ultimately however, they won one of their final seven fixtures to finish the season fifth.
The semi-final against Portsmouth suggested that they were back on track, and in a great position to go on and seal that final spot in next season’s Championship. But it was not to be.
Dunne – who arrived on loan during the January transfer window and was an unused substitute at Wembley – has seemingly confirmed his departure by wishing the club well for the future, but he also felt compelled to apologise to the supporters.
