Former Premier League footballer Jimmy Bullard has hit out on Twitter after Middlesbrough pipped West Ham United to October’s goal of the month award.

There were some great goals throughout October featuring the likes of Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, Stoke City’s Xherdan Shaqiri, Chelsea’s Diego Costa and even Leicester City left-back Christian Fuchs.

So the vote to decide which strike won BBC Match of the Day’s Goal of the Month competition was always going to be hotly contested.

But it appeared Dimitri Payet’s fantastic solo goal scored on the very first day of the month would have it sewn up, with many predicting it would go on to be a contender for goal of the season.

That was until the poll on Match of the Day 2 on Sunday night saw Boro midfielder Gaston Ramirez land the honour with his own excellent goal against Bournemouth getting 30% of the vote.

While Ramirez’s goal was superb, the outcome left many fans scratching their heads given the number of players France hero Payet weaved past on his dazzling run to score against Boro.

And former Wigan, Fulham and Hull midfielder Jimmy Bullard took to Twitter to have his say.

“Are you kidding me goal of the month on MOTD Ramirez never been better than Payet’s,” Bullard posted.

“Payet took on five men (that’s) half a team.”

While Ramirez covered more distance with his run from his own half he actually only beat two players to score on what was a swift and effective counter attack against Eddie Howe’s side last week.

Perhaps what counted against Payet is the fact his goal was so long ago now coming on the first day of the month and with the international break and everything that has happened since while Ramirez’s is still fresh in the memory of most fans.
