Here is how we expect Wolverhampton Wanderers to line-up for their Championship meeting with Brentford.

After an awful start to 2017, which saw Wolverhampton Wanderers lose six games in a row, Paul Lambert’s side travel to Brentford in search of a third consecutive undefeated result.

However, the reality of Wolves’ current predicament is that a 0-0 draw with Ipswich Town, followed by a far from convincing 1-0 win over perennial Championship strugglers Rotherham United, is not the source for jubilation at ending such a poor run of form and results.

As much as the three points against the Millers were welcomed, Wolves still find themselves precariously positioned just above the relegation zone as they prepare for the midweek trip to Griffin Park – to face a Brentford side who have emerged victorious in their last two home games against their Midlands visitors.

Lambert’s team selections in recent weeks have been a cause for discussion amongst Wolves fans – not so much for the preference to deploy a 4-2-3-1 system, but for the inconsistency of personnel selected. Such an example was seen at the weekend, where Lambert fielded an XI consisting of potentially eight midfield players.

Aside from goalkeeper Carl Ikeme and central defensive spots for Mike Williamson and Kortney Hause against Rotherham, Wolves started midfielders George Saville and Conor Coady at full backs, with a five man midfield supporting Andreas Weimann – with the more describable strikers of Nouha Dicko and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson both on the substitutes bench.

Ahead of the game against Brentford, we could see a recall for returning winger Ivan Cavaleiro – who, despite costing £7 million from Monaco at the start of the season, is yet to show any kind of consistency with performace; unlike the stand out Helder Costa, who has been perhaps Wolves’ only shining light of an otherwise disappointing season thus far.

Ultimately, the likelihood is that Cavaleiro may continue his re-introduction to first team action from the bench – perhaps starting in front of a Molineux crowd against Cardiff City in a fortnight’s time.
