Wolverhampton Wanderers fell to a humbling Championship defeat to relegation threatened Bristol City.
After suffering a 3-1 defeat to Bristol City, Paul Lambert’s Wolverhampton Wanderers were unable to extend their admirable five-game-winning streak as they departed Ashton Gate empty handed.
Wolves conceded two first half goals from Bristol’s Jamie Paterson and the first of Tammy Abraham’s double – before falling further behind shortly after the half time team talks, courtesy of the Chelsea loanee’s second strike of the game.
Unfortunately for the Midlanders, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson’s 78th minute goal – the Iceland international’s fist since August – proved nothing other than slight consolation for Lambert’s side – who failed to reach the manager’s expectations.
Indeed, in his post game interview with the BBC, Lambert outlined that his team, ‘…fell below the high standards we have set and when that happens in the Championship you get beaten’, before emphasising his support for the performers in Gold & Black, ‘I am not going to have a go at the players because they have been brilliant in recent games.’
However, whilst the 47-year-old Glaswegian was quick to defend his players, supporters of the Wanderers were less forgiving; as many Wolves fans took to social media to criticise the players on show against the Robins – with Lambert’s favoured midfield pairing of Dave Edwards and Lee Evans in line for specific condemnation.
Edwards and Evans have been recent regulars throughout the outstanding run of five successive victories – but faced the full force of stricture from the Molineux faithful.
