Wolverhampton Wanderers suffered a narrow Championship defeat against Newcastle United.

Wolverhampton Wanderers endured an unlucky thirteenth defeat of their Championship campaign at the hands of table-toppers Newcastle United this weekend – leaving the Molineux club in 18th position in the division.

Much to Wanderers’ boss Paul Lambert’s disappointment, and despite having the better of the encounter, Wolves lost out to a 44th minute Aleksandar Mitrovic strike.

Indeed, the game’s narrative seemed to focus around Newcastle’s front man – who could consider himself fortunate to have been on the field of play by the time of his goal.

Mitrovic was guilty of numerous fouls in the early stages, culminating in a caution, before committing a potentially yellow-card-worthy foul on Wolves goalkeeper Cark Ikeme – for which the Serbia international escaped a second booking.

Mitrovic subsequently delivered the game’s differential strike just before the half-time mark – much to the despair of Wolves’ manager and captain.

Upon reflection of the defeat Wolves skipper Danny Batth took to social media outlet Twitter to console and offer encouragement for their upcoming midweek fixture, where his side host Wigan Athletic.

Batth expressed his view that Wolves deserved more than their loss against the Magpies before turning the focus towards the next game.

Batth’s tweet suggests an emphasis on the belief in the Wolves camp that the defeat to Newcastle was unjust – whilst simultaneously looking towards securing always vital Championship points against 23rd placed Wigan on Tuesday evening.
