Leeds player ratings as late strike secures point against Newcastle: Star man 9/10

Leeds United struck late into added on time to secure a 1-1 draw with Newcastle United. Here’s how Garry Monk’s players rated during the Championship clash.

GK: Robert Green – The former England stopper, despite making a numerous important saves for Leeds throughout the encounter, was ultimately helpless to prevent Newcastle’s Jamaal Lascelles heading the game’s opener on 36 minutes – but put forth a superb performance nonetheless (8/10).

RB: Luke Ayling – Seemed to struggle at various points under heavy Newcastle pressure – particularly when up against Yoan Gouffran on Newcastle’s left hand side. Subsequently, Ayling was unable to support Kemar Roofe from an any attacking point of view (6/10).

CB: Kyle Bartley – An impressive showing from the 25-year-old Bartley, who was commanding in the air and performed admirably as part of a Leeds defence that faced numerous Newcastle onslaughts – especially in the closing stages (8/10).

CB: Pontus Jansson – Leeds’ standout performer. Jansson yet again proved why he is so highly rated at Elland Road with a resilient display alongside central defensive partner Bartley – ensuring that Newcastle’s Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic were contained in the process (9/10).

LB: Gaetano Berardi – Needed to be fully focused in order to compete against Newcastle’s Matt Ritchie along Leeds’ left flank. Charlie Taylor replaced the 28-year-old Switzerland international on 78 minutes – with Ritchie looking most threatening amid late Newcastle pressure thereafter (6/10).

CM: Kalvin Phillips – Unfortunately for the visitors, Phillips looked lost on numerous occasions within the midfield battle against Newcastle’s Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden. Aside from being booked, the 21-year-old put forth a fairly anonymous display and was one of Leeds’ more disappointing performers against the Magpies (5/10).

CM: Liam Bridcutt – In contrast to Phillips, former Sunderland man Bridcutt appeared to embrace the contest and certainly outshone his midfield partner throughout. The 27-year-old captained the team by example and, alongside Jansson and Bartley, helped Leeds contain many of the home side’s attacks (8/10). Replaced by Souleymane Doukara (6/10) as Leeds searched for the game’s equaliser late on.

AM: Kemar Roofe – Admirable efforts from the right of Leeds’ attack, but the 24-year-old left full back Ayling exposed on too many occasions when faced with Newcastle attacks. Roofe provided the assist for Leeds’ last-gasp equaliser (6/10).

AM: Pablo Hernandez – An unusually quiet game from Hernandez, who spent the majority of the encounter battling amongst the midfield quagmire rather than influencing the game in Leeds’ attacking third (6/10).

AM: Alfonso Pedraza – The 21-year-old had an impressive start to the game – including striking the cross bar – but certainly faded as Newcastle emerged the more dominant side (6/10). Consequently replaced by Hadi Sacko (6/10) on the hour mark.

FW: Chris Wood – The talismanic front man spent the majority of the match chasing shadows whilst largely isolated in Leeds’ attack. However, as all good goal-getters tend to do, Wood converted his chance when it arrived – bagging a 95th minute equaliser, the New Zealand international’s 28th goal of the season, to give Garry Monk’s side a share of the spoils (8/10).
