Wolverhampton Wanderers suffered a 1-0 Championship defeat at the hands of Newcastle United.

Despite the disappointing result, Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Paul Lambert was full of praise for his side’s application and approach to the encounter with Championship table-toppers Newcastle United.

However, during Lambert’s post-match comments, and amid commending Wolves on their performance, the Wolves boss was left ruing the circumstances of the narrow 1-0 defeat.

As reported by Sky Sports, when referring to his side’s display against the Magpies, Lambert said, ‘”We [Wolves] are playing really well at the minute.

“We should have worked the goalkeeper more than we did, with the amount of the ball, we were dominating the game so I think there was only one team in it.”

Indeed, Lambert’s belief that there was only one team in it is somewhat supported by the match statistics, where Wolves edged out Newcastle in regard to possession, total passes, shots on goal and shots on target.

Unfortunately for the Molineux-based side, the only stat that really matters is the goals count, with Newcastle’s 44th-minute effort meaning that maximum points returned to the North-East.

While Lambert was full of praise for his own charges, the Wolves boss was less complimentary about Newcastle’s Aleksandar Mitrovic – the scorer of the game’s winning goal.

The 22-year-old striker was involved in numerous fouls in the early staged of the encounter, culminating in a booking, before executing a potentially yellow-card worthy challenge on Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme.

Mitrovic remained on the field of play long enough to score Newcastle’s winner, but was substituted at half time by Magpies boss Rafa Benitez.

The BBC reported that Lambert, when questioned on the Serbian’s contributions to the game, suggested “It is the referee’s call but I know as an ex-player when you have been yellow carded and you raise your studs you are in danger no matter what league or division you are in.”

The Wolves boss continued in similar vein, before reiterating his approval of his own team – as outlined on Sky Sports.

“There was a good case for a red card [for Mitrovic] there as well so I think that there’s big moments in the game when we didn’t get the break or the decisions but I can’t fault for the lads for the way we are playing,” he said.

Wolves remain in 18th position in the Championship and will welcome Wigan Athletic to Molineux on Tuesday evening.
