Could the Wales international stopper be the answer to Liverpool’s goalkeeping conundrum?

Liverpool's Danny Ward

Away from the worldwide exposure Liverpool receive amongst the higher echelons of the Premier League, Huddersfield Town are experiencing a fantastic Championship campaign thus far – with many a Terrier supporter eyeing promotion to the promised lands of the top flight for the first time in the team’s history.

One of the major contributors to the Yorkshire club’s successes this season has been 23-year-old goalkeeper Danny Ward, who has marshalled a stellar back line under the management of manager David Wagner. Indeed, on the way to third place in the division, Wagner’s side have been far from prolific scorers but somewhat impenetrable in defence.

Ward, currently on loan from Liverpool, has certainly impressed many an observer during his 35 appearances so far this season – with several confident, competent and collected displays being validated by conceding an average of just 1.17 goals per game, in addition to helping Huddersfield secure 1.86 points per game.

The kind of form and consistency that Ward has presented since temporarily leaving Anfield is something that has been noticeably absent from both of Liverpool’s stoppers, Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius – with the duo facing criticism at various points this season.

With the Daily Mail reporting that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will review the permanent number one role at Anfield in the summer, serious consideration may well be given to the merits of Ward – who will also hope to challenege under-fire Crystal Palace keeper Wayne Hennessey for the gloves at international level in the coming years.
