Newcastle United are still top of the Championship on Sunday.

Newcastle United beat Preston North End 2-1 at Deepdale on Saturday to remain top of the Championship.

Two second-half goals from Aleksandar Mitrovic helped Newcastle into a fairly comfortable 2-0 lead, before Jermain Beckford grabbed a late consolation.

Rafael Benitez’s side remain three points clear of second-placed Brighton & Hove Albion but, significantly, they are now six clear in the automatic promotion spots, following Huddersfield’s 5-0 defeat at Fulham yesterday afternoon.

A couple of the Magpies lads were active on Twitter afterwards as Jamaal Lascelles and Jesus Gamez, the £1.5 million signing from Atletico Madrid who returned to the bench on Saturday following a two-month absence with injury, reacted to the win over the Lilywhites.

The Magpies host Cardiff City at St James’s Park next weekend as they look to pull further away from their promotion rivals by beating the Bluebirds.
