Jesse Marsch has told the Week In The Tackle podcast that after re-watching the first half of Leeds United’s 3-2 win over Wolves that the first half was not as bad as first thought, watching live. Leeds were 2-0 down at half-time.
Leeds came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2, a game that largely hinged on Raul Jimenez’s red card. Jonny and Trincao scored in the first half at Molineux, while Leeds were forced into replacing two injured players.
Illan Meslier and Patrick Bamford were forced off, and rookie Under-23 men Sam Greenwood and Kristoffer Klaesson came on. But Leeds showed grit, determination and a never-say-die attitude to come back and win 3-2.
Jack Harrison tapped home the first, before Rodrigo made it 2-2. Luke Ayling got the winner, scoring from a set-piece on 91 minutes. Marsch reflected on his second win in four games, after beating Norwich.
He claims that Leeds were not as bad as he first thought watching the game live in the first half, stating that had the score been only 1-0 – it would have been easier to reflect on the performance; 2-0 worsening it.
“If it’s 0-1 at half-time, we had some big chances at the start of the game, then you can reflect on the half better. I watched that half again and it wasn’t as bad as it felt when it was live for me,” Marsch said.

Marsch on Leeds win: Red card was crucial against Wolves
But Marsch is right to say that Leeds were better than the 2-0 deficit suggested. Leeds had chances to score and should have at least found the back of Jose Sa’s net once before the referee called time on the first 45.
However, the red card was absolutely crucial and a turning point in the match – as was losing Bamford early on. Was it a red? Probably not, but you need a bit of luck when fighting against relegation. Leeds got it at Wolves.
