Jesse Marsch has told Friday’s press conference – as per the Leeds United YouTube – that new signing Willy Gnonto has “surprised” all at the club and he will be included in the senior squad for the first time to take on Aston Villa.
Gnonto, 18, joined Leeds on deadline day from FC Zurich. It comes after moves for Cody Gakpo and Bamba Dieng fell through on the final day. Gnonto, an exciting talent, was the club’s third choice on the final day of the window.
He was first seen in a Leeds shirt just before the international break, featuring for the club’s U21 side. He played 81 minutes in a 6-2 win over Southampton. Gnonto then played against England for Italy, and started against Hungary.
Now, back at Elland Road, Gnonto has been working hard to be a part of the squad that faces Villa. Asked about the Italy ace, Marsch said Gnonto has “pleasantly surprised” many at Thorp Arch – and he will be in the squad for Villa.

“He has pleasantly surprised all of us. There was this video of us meeting in my office which almost viral, which was funny as it is was a normal interaction. But in that video you can see his humbleness and maturity.
“In training he has been fantastic, good for the 21’s, he will be in the squad this weekend. We think he can play a big role. I guess you can say I can revise my statement. To get him as early as we have is advantageous for everyone.”
Marsch says new Leeds signing Gnonto has surprised all at Elland Road
Firstly, for Leeds to sign an attacking player for about £5million that is starting for Italy is quite sensational. Another feather in the cap for Victor Orta at Leeds. Secondly, for Italy, he looked impressive for a talent at just 18 years old.
Speed, power, willing to throw himself into a battle with defenders and able to win numerous free-kicks, he is a real talent. Leeds needed a bit of excitement in the final third and they got that with new signings; Gnonto included.
