Jesse Marsch slammed goalkeeper Illan Meslier in Leeds United training after a ‘sloppy’ pass, according to midfielder Adam Forshaw.

The Whites made the heartbreaking decision to sack Marcelo Bielsa last season, bringing an end to a remarkable period in charge at Elland Road.

Leeds moved quickly to land their next manager though as Jesse Marsch – who had been sacked by RB Leipzig – arrived into Bielsa’s role, but without taking his famous bucket.

Following on from an icon was never going to be easy but Marsch just about did what was asked of him; he kept Leeds in the Premier League by the skin of their teeth.

Marsch is still having to win over some Leeds fans but it sounds like the players love him.

Jesse Marsch slammed goalkeeper Illan Meslier

Leeds midfielder Adam Forshaw has opened up about the American whilst speaking to Danny Murphy for the Daily Mail.

Forshaw has described Marsch as ‘nice’ but told a story that highlighted just how he can switch his approach when it’s needed.

Forshaw tells of how Illan Meslier received an absolute tirade from Marsch in training having played not one but two sloppy passes.

Marsch made him re-try after the first one, which stunned the Leeds players anyway, and really gave it to the Frenchman with both barrels after the second attempt went the same way.

Marsch made it clear that he still loves Meslier but that kind of message left Leeds players in no uncertain terms on who the boss is at Elland Road.

“He’s nice but can switch if he needs to,” said Forshaw. “We were doing phase play in training and [goalkeeper] IIlan Meslier gave a slow pass out, a sloppy one. Jesse ordered him to do it again, which the lads weren’t expecting. Illan gave another slow one and Jesse has ripped into him. Five minutes later, the gaffer is laughing, saying ‘I still love you’. It was a different side from the manager that the lads respect,” he added.

Marsch has had to deal with detractors ever since arriving into the Premier League, mostly because he’s American.

The Ted Lasso jokes have been coming in relentlessly and Marsch has brushed it off so far, though results have been mixed this season with two wins, two draws and two defeats.

Leeds fans ultimately won’t care about his nationality, or whether he calls the game ‘soccer’, it’s all about points and performances.

Meslier will be a better player for Marsch’s input and the hope is that the Frenchman and his Leeds teammates can all improve under Marsch, just as many did under Bielsa.
