Jesse Marsch explains why he has perhaps been unfair to Leeds midfielder so far

Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch told his post-match press conference – as per Leeds Live – that he has perhaps been “unfair” to star Sam Greenwood during his reign, given the player can play in so many different positions.

Greenwood, 20, broke into the senior Leeds side and was regularly used by Marsch towards the end of last season. He played 10 times, his best outing coming on the final day of the season – proving crucial to his side’s survival.

In the 2-1 win, he played as a holding midfielder with Kalvin Phillips. But Greenwood came to Leeds from Arsenal for £3million (LES) as a striker. For the 23’s, he has played up top, as a 10, or an eight. He can now play deeper, too.

Marsch was asked about the ex-Sunderland academy man and raved about his versatility – but stated that could be “unfair” on him. It is unclear as to what position Marsch believes Greenwood is best utilised.

“He has a lot of flexibility to his game. He’s played six, eight, 10, he can play striker. In some ways, it’s not fair to him to try different positions, but he’s an intelligent player. He fits within what we’re trying to build within our team.

“He’s a hard worker, he’s an intelligent guy, he’s able and that’s the reason why we use him in a lot of positions is because he’s very adaptable,” Marsch said, following the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday morning.

Where is his best position? When Greenwood has come into the first team, his best performances have been deeper in midfield. That might be testament to his footballing intelligence, as Marsch references.

His ability to get the ball off the defenders and spray forward passes is excellent. But so are the positions he takes up as an 8 or a 10. His 21 goals in 37 Leeds Under-23 games shows he can play up top, too. It is difficult to say.
