Leeds reportedly tried to sign Paris Saint-Germain winger Jese in January.

The January transfer window showed just how close Leeds United are to promotion. The signing of a goalkeeper from Real Madrid who even has a Spanish cap to his name, and the willingness to spend £8million on Daniel James got fans excited.

The club were even linked with Hoffenheim winger and Switzerland World Cup star Steven Zuber, Spartak Moscow striker Ze Luis and now, the club have most recently been linked with Paris Saint-Germain attacker Jese.

Spanish outlet El Desmarque claim that Leeds fought right until the end of the January transfer window to sign 25-year-old Jese, who instead opted to return to his home country with Real Betis.

Jese joined French champions PSG in the summer of 2016 for a fee of £22million (Marca), but has since managed just 15 appearances for the Ligue 1 side. Instead, he has been sent on loan to Las Palmas, Stoke and now Betis.

The Spain youth international is to remain at Betis until the end of the season, and has so far made three appearances – failing to score but creating one goal. He has a contract at PSG until the summer of 2021.

Likely to be on the lookout for a new club in the summer, then, Leeds may find that the chances of them luring Jese back to England for a second spell will be helped if they gain promotion to the Premier League.

And if they do return to the top flight, Jese should be first choice. The versatile attacker would be an unbelievable signing that would not only dramatically improve Leeds on the pitch, but also develop huge enthusiasm in the stands.

Fans would go wild for Jese, while he would fit right in with the likes of Casilla and Pablo Hernandez – and Samu Saiz if he returns. Bielsa would also love a player like Jese, who has pace to burn and can play in a number of positions.

Landing the Spaniard on loan from PSG would give Leeds the flair and attacking prowess to have a good chance of surviving the drop, if the club do gain promotion.
