Jermaine Jenas thinks Tottenham may have to sell Christian Eriksen

Tottenham Hotspur are yet to make a signing during the January transfer window.

Jermaine Jenas has told BT Sport that Spurs may have to consider selling a key player like Christian Eriksen if Mauricio Pochettino wants to improve his side in the transfer market.

It has been a frustrating time for Pochettino and the Tottenham supporters. They failed to make a signing during the summer, and they are yet to add to their ranks during the January transfer window.

In comments reported by the London Evening Standard last month, Pochettino suggested that Spurs’ chances of signing players would depend on their ability to clear some of their existing squad off the books.

And while there appear to be some fringe players that they would ideally like to move on, Jenas suggested that it may be time to take a very brave step and consider selling a player of Eriksen’s calibre.

“I think they’re going to have to lose one or two to get that investment,” he told BT Sport. “And I actually look at say, Liverpool as a real good way of looking at it.

“They sold Coutinho. At the time, that hurt Liverpool fans. He was their best player moving on to Barcelona. But they used that money wisely. Naby Keita came in, Alisson the goalkeeper, they spent some on van Dijk. They made a better team from one individual. That might be Eriksen.”

Liverpool have certainly improved as a team since Coutinho’s departure, and their progress may perhaps tempt Spurs to consider rolling the dice if a serious bid for one of their key players comes in.

But it is one thing having the money to spend, it is another to spend it well. And if Spurs decided to let Eriksen leave, the club would put themselves under enormous pressure to make sure that the decision is vindicated as there will be plenty of criticism coming their way if they allowed the Dane to go.
