Tottenham Hotspur have signed Davinson Sanchez from Ajax in the summer transfer window.
Tottenham Hotspur made their first signing of the summer transfer window this week.
The North London outfit completed the signing of Davinson Sanchez from Ajax for a transfer fee that could be worth up to £40 million, according to Sky Sports.
Sanchez is only 21 years of age, but the central defender is hugely promising and could develop into a world-class footballer in the coming years.
The centre-back enjoyed a hugely successful season on a personal level for Ajax last season, and the Colombia international is certainly going to enhance the quality of the Spurs squad.
However, £40m is a lot of money for any footballer, especially for a 21-year-old who may not even play regularly for Spurs this season.
In a back-two system for Tottenham, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are the two central defenders.
Perhaps manager Mauricio Pochettino will deploy a back-three from time to time this campaign, and that could enable Sanchez to start.
Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas, though, is worried that Sanchez could be a long-term replacement for Alderweireld.
The Belgium international’s current contract with the North London outfit runs until June 2020, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk, but talks over a new deal have been going for a while and the two parties have yet to reach an agreement, according to The Daily Mail.
Jenas said on The Friday Football Social show on BBC Radio 5live on Friday evening (7pm, August 18, 2017): “The only thing that kind of it worries me about it is that has it got a little bit of a feeling of is he is a replacement for Alderweireld?
“If this Alderweireld situation doesn’t go well with regards to his contract negoation, is he his replacement to be in there with Vertonghen or whoever? I hope not.”
