Speaking on the BBC Radio 5 Live Football Daily Podcast, Jermaine Jenas has claimed that Liverpool need to sign a new centre-half as they can’t rely on Joel Matip or Joe Gomez.

The pundit believes that the pair’s injury record has shown they’re not reliable enough for a club with such ambitious goals at Liverpool.

Unfortunately, Matip and Gomez have missed large periods of this season with injury, and Jenas believes Liverpool need a new centre-back to compensate for their injury woes.

“I don’t think it’s a rebuild thing, they just need to get their best players back fit, and I think they probably need to adjust the Roberto Firmino situation potentially, and they need to bring in a centre-half, because Joel Matip has shown that he can’t be relied on when he’s needed and possibly Joe Gomez is the same as that as well.”

Jenas isn’t wrong, and Liverpool have already worked towards filling that gap, signing Ozan Kabak on loan with an option to buy him at the end of the season.

Whether or not Liverpool exercise that option to buy remains to be seen, but after Kabak’s Man of the Match performance in the Champions League this week, we have to imagine he’s not done his chances of staying on any harm.

Perhaps Jenas is being a little harsh when saying Gomez can’t be relied on, he was a key player in Liverpool’s Premier League title win last season, and while he has had his injury problems, he’s only young and we have to hope that these issues don’t plague him for his whole career.
