The Magpies are currently at the top of the Championship table.
Former Newcastle United midfielder Jermaine Jenas has suggested that this current Toon side would still struggle in the Premier League – despite their excellent form in the Championship at present.
Jenas, who spent three years at Newcastle United, was speaking on BT Sport Score when he suggested that the current Magpies team is not good enough to thrive in the top-flight and would again struggle if promoted.

He stated:
“I think they would struggle, to be honest with you, in the Premier League.
“In the Championship they did the two big things they had to do. Number one was keep Rafa Benitez, number two was spend a lot of money.

“They did that. They’ve got a good squad.
“But the bulk of the players there if they did come up they’d probably have to sell on to have the quality to stay in the Premiership.”
He made the comments before their most recent fixture, which came against struggling Blackburn Rovers at St James’ Park. Based on the result in that game, it seems that Jenas might have a fair point.
Newcastle United fell to a surprise loss in the Championship this afternoon as Charlie Mulgrew’s first goal for Blackburn snatched a 1-0 win for Owen Coyle’s side at Newcastle.
Newcastle remain top of the Championship and this result will not see fans of the club start to panic that they will not earn promotion.
They remain the favourites to head to the top-tier but there is no doubt that they will need to improve their squad if they do win promotion.
