Sunderland managed to beat Bournemouth 2-1 yesterday.
Jermaine Jenas has told Match of the Day, which was broadcast on BBC One on 5th November, that Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford saved his side against Bournemouth yesterday.
Sunderland picked up a 2-1 win against the Cherries at Dean Court on Saturday, to collect their first three points of the season.
However, Jenas did not feel that Sunderland’s win was achieved through the strength of their defensive performance.
Instead, the former Newcastle United midfielder suggested that Sunderland’s defence had still been vulnerable, but they were saved by Pickford’s brilliance.
“The one thing Bournemouth didn’t expect was the form of Jordan Pickford. He was sensational,” Jenas said.
“If we’re honest, Sunderland’s display wasn’t the most organised and it wasn’t a brilliant defensive display. But when you have a goalkeeper in this type of form it’s such an asset. He was absolutely brilliant.”
Bournemouth peppered Sunderland’s goal with shots, but they could not find a way past Pickford, after Dan Gosling had put them into the lead.
Sunderland fired back through Jermain Defoe and Victor Anichebe, and although Steven Pienaar was sent off, Bournemouth still could not grab an equalising goal.
Pickford pulled off a string of excellent saves in the contest, and one from a Josh King volley was particularly memorable.
Sunderland are still stuck at the foot at the bottom of the Premier League table, but they have moved closer to safety now.
