Everton narrowly missed out on European football this season.
Jermaine Jenas has praised the Everton board for not buckling and backing manager Marco Silva during the tough times which has now resulted in their change in form.
On Friday night, the Toffees played their last home game of the Premier League season and they ended it with a comfortable 2-0 win over Burnley.
There were moments during the season that Silva found himself under huge pressure, but he was backed by those in charge and since then his team have gone on to secure a number of big wins.
Speaking to Football Focus on BBC One (04/05/2019 at 12:20 pm), Jenas credited the hierarchy at Goodison Park for sticking by Silva during the difficult times.
“He’s got the crowd back on side,” Jenas told Football Focus. “I think you have to give credit to the powers that be at Everton because there was a moment where they could have buckled and quite easily have sacked Marco Silva. It was going down that route.
“Then if you looked at Marco Silva’s history it was very much, a very good start and then it falls off a little. But they [the board] stuck with him and everyone seems to be flourishing because of it. They have gone from a flaky season to a very decent season.”
Some of the low points for Everton this season was losing to Millwall in the FA Cup and suffering a 3-2 defeat at relegation-threatened Newcastle United despite taking an early 2-0 lead.
And some of the high points have been beating the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United on home soil this season and having the third-best defence in the league this season.
Silva has secured a top 10 finish in his first season in charge at Goodison Park and the fans will be hoping for a European finish next term.
