Jermaine Jenas has said on BT Sports that clubs like Leeds United and Newcastle United should be playing in the Europa Conference League, not Tottenham Hotspur.
The former Tottenham and Newcastle midfielder made the comments after the final day of the Premier League season yesterday.
Spurs have finished seventh in the league table with 62 points from 36 matches and will enter the Europa Conference League at the playoff round stage.
Jenas said on BT Sport: “If you are Leeds, if you are Newcastle, if you are, I don’t know, Palace, Brighton and those clubs that are not really going to be experiencing Europe, then it’s something that you would want to be involved in that will give you the opportunity to get into the Europa League.”
The Europa Conference League is a new European competition.
It has been conceived to give chances to clubs from countries who would not be able to qualify for the Champions League or the Europa League.
It is not really a competition that means a lot of to richer leagues like the Premier League.
We do not think that even Leeds or Newcastle would be keen on playing in it.
There is simply not enough money or prestige in the competition.
Winning the competition will secure a spot in the Europa League.
While that might be attractive to clubs such as Leeds and Newcastle, it could be hard to play on a Thursday and then on a Sunday for clubs who do not have the depth in squad.
