Former Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United midfielder Jermaine Jenas has been quoted as saying by The Mirror that the past two weeks have been the toughest in the career of Everton and Wales international central defender Ashley Williams.

Williams has been on the books of Everton since the summer of 2016 when he joined from Premier League rivals Swansea City for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £12 million.

The 33-year-old played well last season, but so far this season the defender has not been on top of his game.

The former Stockport County county endured a disappointing evening on Thursday, as he failed to play well in Everton’s 2-1 defeat to French club Lyon at Goodison Park in the Europa League.

As reported by The Mirror, Williams went in so hard on Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes which cause a mass brawl.

The defender was also part of the recent Wales squad that failed to book a place in the 2018 World Cup playoffs.

Former Tottenham, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest midfielder Jenas believes that the last two weeks have been the toughest in the career of Williams.

“The last couple of weeks will probably go down as the toughest weeks of his career really,” The Mirror quotes Jenas as saying about Williams.

“Getting knocked out with Wales in the way they did, a lot of that fell on his shoulders, and the way they went out.”
