Jermaine Jenas has heaped praise on Moussa Sissoko when talking to BT Sport, applauding the Frenchman for overcoming his difficult start to life at Tottenham Hotspur – and urged fans to finally show him some love.

Sissoko joined Spurs in the summer of 2016 from Newcastle United for a reported fee of £30million on deadline day, but in his first two seasons with the north London club, he struggled to make an impression.

The 29-year-old is beginning to show this season, though, the kind of form that Spurs paid such a big price for two years ago. His performance against Inter was just another example of his improving confidence.

Ex-Spurs midfielder reckons criticism from fans made the versatile France international “trapped”, but believe his displays this season are deserving of more praise and love from fans.

“He would have felt trapped. You take the easy option all the time, instead of those driving runs that you saw in the lead up to the goal. That’s why Spurs signed him, because he was doing that at Newcastle,” Jenas said.

“The beauty of it, is that he has got someone like Mauricio. Now, we are starting to see why he is at this football club. He was massive. The goal today – he deserves to start getting a bit of love.”

Sissoko was key to Spurs’ first goal, picking up the ball from Serge Aurier in midfield and driving into the Inter box before squaring to Dele Alli, who showed awareness to feed Christian Eriksen who fired home the only goal of the game.

Spurs have leapfrogged Inter into second in Group B of the Champions League, but have it all to do as they travel to the Nou Camp for the last group game – while Inter play host to PSV Eindhoven.

With Inter expected to beat PSV, Spurs will have to do the unthinkable and beat Barcelona in their own back yard if they are to stand a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition.
