The former Spurs star was hugely impressed with one man in particular on Wednesday night.
Former Tottenham Hotspur star Jermaine Jenas has told BBC Sport that regardless of Dele Alli’s fine match-winning brace, the key star in the superb 2-0 win over Chelsea on Wednesday night was Victor Wanyama.
Spurs produced a tremendous display and equally impressive result to inflict a 2-0 defeat on Antonio Conte’s runaway league leaders at White Hart Lane.
The result ended Chelsea’s run of 13 straight Premier League wins, consigning the Blues to their first league defeat since late September.
Alli’s two goals – the second a carbon copy of his first, an excellent header from a fine Christian Eriksen cross – were enough to seal a superb fifth league win on the bounce for the hosts.
That brace took the young star’s tally to seven in his last four games, and saw him surpass his total of 10 Premier League strikes from last season.
However, it was not Alli whom Jenas singled out at the final whistle but his more defensive midfield teammate Wanyama, describing the Kenyan as “immense” during the game.
Jenas told BBC Sport: “I’m sure Dele Alli will get all the plaudits and rightly so for his two special moments, but the job Victor Wanyama has done in that midfield for Spurs has been immense.
“He has helped protect that back three. He has been really important in what looks like a Spurs win this evening.”
Wanyama has received praise on numerous occasions so far this season, and he certainly appears to be the perfect defensive midfield partner for Mousa Dembele.
Spurs’ superb win over the league leaders lifts them above Arsenal and Manchester City and into third in the Premier League table.
