Shaqiri has been linked with Spurs and a whole host of other Premier League clubs since Stoke’s relegation to the Championship.
Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jermaine Jenas has told BBC Sport’s live coverage of Sweden’s clash against Switzerland that he is a big fan of Xherdan Shaqiri – after he was linked with Spurs last month.
TeamTalk reported last month that Spurs were keen on the 26-year-old, along with Everton and West Ham United, with the Stoke City star’s contract including a £12million relegation clause.
Indeed, Stoke finished in the bottom three and have dropped into Championship, making that eight-figure clause become active. It is likely to see Shaqiri move on at the end of the season.
With Spurs keen, Jenas was asked about Switzerland’s main attacking source, and the former midfielder was full of praise for the 73-time international – describing him as “robust”, “strong” and able to “carry the pressure”.
“He is the guy that carries the pressure for Switzerland,” Jenas said. “He is the creator, he has started [The World Cup] very well, he is always in wide areas and he is very direct and looking to create things.
“He tries to make things happen. He wants to split lines and get his team chances or score goals. Strikers will love playing with him. He’s strong and robust.”
Shaqiri failed to make the difference on Tuesday afternoon as Sweden sent Switzerland crashing out of the World Cup with a 1-0 win, thanks to Emil Forsberg’s effort that deflected past Yann Sommer via Manuel Akanji.
Shaqiri was a rare shining light in Stoke’s side last season, having a hand in 15 goals during his 36 Premier League appearances. He scored seven goals and laid on eight assists.
The former Bayern Munich and Inter Milan star has two years remaining on his current contract, with Spurs said to be keen on bringing the Swiss superstar to north London.
