Jermaine Jenas has told BBC Sport that Tottenham Hotspur’s lack of depth remains a worry as Mauricio Pochettino looks to mount a Premier League title challenge – and explains why Son Heung-min is at the heart of that issue.
Spurs continued their excellent form on Sunday afternoon with an emphatic 6-2 win over Everton, which saw Harry Kane and Son both grab a brace, while Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli also got on the score sheet.
The win sees Spurs sit in third place, but open up a five-point gap on fourth-placed Chelsea. They sit two points behind Manchester City who lost to Crystal Palace, while Liverpool are four points ahead of Pep Guardiola’s men.
Former Spurs midfielder Jenas believes a title race is on and Spurs are in the thick of it, but reckons depth is an issue and Son’s imminent participation in the Asian Cup for South Korea will come as a “big miss”.
“Tottenham’s squad depth is still my biggest concern, and why I feel winning the Premier League might be beyond them,” Jenas said. “Any injury that kept Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen or Dele Alli out for a significant length of time would be a huge blow to them.
“They are already going to be without Son Heung-Min for potentially the whole of January while he plays for South Korea in the Asian Cup. The way he has been playing, and scoring goals, he will be a big miss.”
Son, 26, has now had a hand in 13 goals in 22 league and cup appearances, scoring eight times and creating five more in assists.
Football London claim Spurs have struck an agreement with South Korea that will see the former Bayer Leverkusen attacker miss South Korea’s first two games against the Phillipines and Kyrgyzstan.
But he will head off to face China on January 16, and depending on how far South Korea go in the competition, he could be unavailable until February 1.
