Jermaine Jenas has told Match of the Day 2 that Ryan Sessegnon is going through a “tough time” at Tottenham – but thinks Antonio Conte is right to overlook him. He was hooked before 30 minutes against Wolves on Sunday.

Sessegnon, 21, has started just five games for Tottenham since the arrival of Antonio Conte – four of which have come in the Premier League. The other, in Europe, saw Sessegnon sent off just 31 minutes into the match.

His start against Wolves on Sunday did not even last that long. With Wolves going 2-0 up inside the first 20 minutes, the ex-Fulham man was replaced by Dejan Kulusevski as Conte chose to try and change his side tactically.

Jenas spoke about Sessegnon on MOTD2 after being taken off before 30 minutes. He says that the left-footed England Under-21 star is going through a tough time but that Conte is right to give him that tough time at Spurs.

“He’s a young lad that is going through a really tough time. It was nice to see Antonio Conte embrace him, but he can’t argue with it. Hopefully it was just a tactical decision because he wasn’t the only one that was poor,” Jenas said.

Jenas on Sessegnon: Tottenham star might have to go on loan in summer

Sessegnon is still an important part of Tottenham’s side. But playing here and there, getting a few minutes off the bench and the odd start, is not going to get the best out of the left-sided flyer. His confidence is low.

He needs to go on loan again, impressing at Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga during 2020-21. Tottenham have cover, Ben Davies, Sergio Reguilon, Matt Doherty and others could fill in. Even Kulusevski could play as a wing-back.

Joining a Premier League club on loan until the summer, a place where Sessegnon would be first choice, would massively help him. Boosting his confidence, but also allowing Spurs to keep a close eye on him.
