West Ham United’s Andre Ayew received negative press today.
Jermaine Jenas has questioned on BBC Sport whether West Ham United striker Andre Ayew should get a retrospective ban for diving following his perceived theatrics in Friday’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City.
The Ghanaian attacker appeared to simulate contact against Harry Maguire in an effort to win a penalty from referee Martin Atkinson, who rubbished the West Ham’s angry appeals afterwards.
Everton’s Oumar Niasse received a two-match ban this week after he “exaggerated the effect of a normal contact to deceive the referee” by winning a penalty in last week’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace.
In doing so, Niasse became the first player to be punished under the new rule, and Jenas claims that he would be surprised if the West Ham man didn’t also receive a punishment for his attempt.
“I would surprised if Ayew doesn’t get done for diving there. It is a shocking dive and fair play to Martin Atkinson for spotting it, but he should have booked him,” he told BBC Sport.
According to the rules, the Irons hitman, a £20.5 million signing 18 months ago, cannot face retrospective action after he failed to win the penalty, unlike Niasse who succeeded.
David Moyes’s side came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with the Foxes last night, with the so-called dive coming late in the second half.
