Glasgow Rangers loanee Jermain Defoe has been outstanding for the Ibrox side in recent weeks.

After Alfredo Morelos’ red card in the most recent Old Firm game, there appeared to be a split amongst the Rangers supporters on social media regarding what the Colombian’s future should entail.

Morelos has been outstanding in front of goal. But his discipline issues have cost Steven Gerrard’s side this term, and he is yet to prove that he is making progress to temper that part of his game.

Selling him this summer had previously looked like it would be a huge gamble. When Rangers have been without Morelos this season, they have often looked much less threatening in the final third, and have struggled at times to put the ball into the back of the net.

But after their recent run of results, Gerrard may feel that he has the evidence he needs to conclude that selling Morelos may actually be worth considering if the Gers receive an eye-watering bid for the youngster.

Jermain Defoe of Rangers controls the ball during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premier League match between Rangers and Dundee at Ibrox Stadium on February 27, 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland.

In the three games Morelos has missed, Rangers have scored nine goals on their way to three victories. Jermain Defoe has scored two of those goals, but his overall performances have shown exactly why it seemed to be such a coup for the Gers to land him in January.

In particular, his link-up play with Scott Arfield was crucial as the Canada international bagged a hat-trick in the 3-0 win at Motherwell earlier in the month.

Defoe is set to be at Ibrox for another season as things stand. And given his recent form, there seems to be no reason to think that the 36-year-old will have any problem making an impact in the Scottish Premiership next season.

With Kyle Lafferty also available to Gerrard, and Rangers surely able to command an eight-figure fee for Morelos, selling him may actually be the option that allows the Gers to take the biggest step forward.

Of course, much of that will come down to whether they sign a good enough replacement for Morelos. But they will certainly have the funds to make big improvements.

Defoe’s recent form has potentially given Rangers the safety net to roll the dice if a serious bid for Morelos comes in this summer.
