Sunderland were beaten 4-1 by Arsenal at the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon.
Speaking to Sky Sports following the defeat to Arsenal, Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has urged his teammates to stick together.
The Black Cats hosted Arsene Wenger’s team at the Stadium of Light in Saturday’s early kick-off.
It proved to be a disastrous afternoon for them as two goals each from Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud saw the Gunners to a comfortable 4-1 win.
It means Sunderland are without a win in the first 10 games of the season and rooted to the bottom of the Premier League with just two points to their name.
It is fair to say that the situation is looking dire and Defoe has urged his teammates to stick together to get out of it.
“It’s important to remain positive and stick together,” he told Sky Sports.
“Everyone is working hard, we’re trying, we just need that bit of luck and that first win to kick on. Obviously, it’s difficult. It’s important to remain positive.”
It remains to be seen if Sunderland can turn things around sooner rather than later and get themselves out of this predicament.
There is no escaping the fact that the situation is a dire one, with the defeat to Arsenal meaning that they have the worst points tally at this stage of the season in Premier League history.
The positive is that this is a situation to which they have become accustomed and from which they know how to escape, although currently it looks like it will take a miracle for them to do so.
