Jermain Defoe enjoyed a number of successful years at Tottenham Hotspur as he is now hoping to guide Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title at the end of the season.

Jermain Defoe of Rangers arrives ahead of the Scottish Premier League match between Hearts and Rangers at Tynecastle Park on 20 October, 2019 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Rangers striker Jermain Defoe thinks that Tottenham should have won more trophies during his time at the club despite being part of an ‘unbelievable’ squad.

The former England striker also sounded a warning to Rangers by stating that having ‘one of the best squads’ in the league doesn’t guarantee you success as he is hoping to lift some silverware with the Glasgow giants this season.

Steven Gerrard is the man put in charge to delivers success for the Gers, as Defoe’s goals upfront could be crucial to them knocking their Old Firm rivals off their perch.

Defoe, who only won the League Cup with Spurs, looked back on those days with the North London outfit, as he is hoping his current team have the qualities and character to push themselves over the dotted line.

“I do believe we had the quality of player to win so much more at Tottenham but it just didn’t happen for us,” Defoe told The Daily Mail. “We had an unbelievable squad but we got one League Cup.

“Just because you have one of the best squads in the league [in regards to Rangers] doesn’t guarantee you success. You need to perform, yes, but also have the character to get over the line.. That’s the position we are in now.”

Rangers will be in Scottish League Cup action next month as they take on their Old Firm rivals in the final at Hampden, with Neil Lennon hoping to add a tenth straight trophy to the Parkhead cabinet.

Whilst Defoe will be aiming to lift some silverware at Ibrox this term, he will also be hoping that Mauricio Pochettino can deliver the goods at Spurs.

The North London outfit, who reached the Champion League final last season, are currently experiencing a difficult campaign, with questions being asked of the manager and his players.
