Sunderland ace did not like being referred to as ‘old’ by former Tottenham teammate.

17 years after scoring his first professional goal, Jermain Defoe earned a call up to the England squad yesterday.

The Sunderland ace has netted 14 Premier League goals this season, 11 more than any of his teammates.

Defoe scored for England at the 2010 World Cup, and now has a chance to help the Three Lions earn a spot at the 2018 tournament.

He is a player well known to most of his England teammates, especially the Tottenham contingent, the club for which he still holds their record as their all time top goalscorer in European competitions.

Kyle Walker sent him a congratulatory message on Twitter yesterday, but put Defoe’s noise out of joint.

34-year-old Defoe had one problem with Walker’s message… the use of the word ‘old’, and called the Tottenham right-back out on it, who promptly backtracked.

Defoe’s call up was partly down to the injury suffered by Walker’s Tottenham teammate Harry Kane.

How Tottenham wish they could call on their former star as easily as England can.
