Jermain Defoe, on loan at Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox club Glasgow Rangers, was at Sunderland from 2015 until 2017.
Jermain Defoe of Rangers
Defoe joined Rangers on an 18-month loan deal from Premier League club Bournemouth in the January transfer window.
The 36-year-old former Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United striker was on the books of Sunderland from 2015 until 2017.
The Englishman has praised the Rangers fans, and has compared the Ibrox faithful to supporters of Sunderland – who are now in League One in England.
Defoe said on the SPFL Matters show on Sky Sports Football (6pm, May 3, 2019): “Even my time at Sunderland, that sort of culture at the football club, where the fans, football is so important. Obviously coming up here, reminds me a little bit of Sunderland where the fans are just unbelievable.”

Important player
Defoe did not start life at Rangers strongly, but the striker has been superb in recent weeks, mainly because of the suspension of Alfredo Morelos.
The 36-year-old has made nine starts and six substitute appearances in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers this season, scoring eight goals in the process, according to WhoScored.
With Defoe finding his feet at Ibrox, Rangers will be a force to be reckoned with next season.
Rangers have finished second in the Scottish Premiership table this season, and Steven Gerrard’s side will be determined to give Celtic a run for their money in 2019-20.
