Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, Jermain Defoe has been discussing some of the best attackers in world football and Mohamed Salah.

Defoe was asked to speak about some of the forwards in the modern game who impress him, and interestingly, he spoke about Jamie Vardy.

The ex-Spurs man says that he loves Vardy because he’s such a willing runner who is always looking to get into dangerous positions, and he drew comparisons with Salah, stating that they’re similar in that way.

What’s been said?

Defoe spoke about Vardy and Salah.

“Jamie Vardy, he’s just relentless, he keeps running in behind and running in behind, a lot of players now, they want to come short and to the ball, but for me, Vardy is one who I thought must be horrible to play against. We talk about Mo Salah as well, he’s relentless again with his running in behind,” Defoe said.

Effective

There’s a lot to be said about modern forwards dropping deep and being dynamic playmakers as well as effective finishers, but at the end of the day, getting in behind is still incredibly effective.

There’s a reason Vardy and Salah are both consistent Golden Boot contenders, they stretch defences and get into dangerous areas.

Of course, Salah has a bit more to his game than Vardy, just look at his goals against Manchester City and Watford this season as examples, but the majority of his goals are scored, as Defoe says, by getting in behind the opposition’s backline.
