Jermain Defoe has told The Mail that his transfer to Rangers had an unusual helpful hand from Kenny Miller.

Miller met with Defoe on their summer holidays last year on a chance meeting, and discussed with Defoe the possibility of him moving to Ibrox.

It was an intriguing move from Miller, who was suspended by Rangers at the end of last season following an acrimonious club dispute.

Miller has always insisted he had no ill will towards the club where he spent the best years of his career.

The Dundee forward’s actions speak volumes, and helped sow the seeds for Defoe to consider a January switch to Ibrox this month.

Defoe said: “It was back in June when we were both on holiday in Dubai,’ recalled Defoe. ‘I spoke to Kenny and he just said it was an unbelievable club and that at some point they would be back to their best.

“He asked me if I fancied it. Because at that time there was talk on social media about it. At this stage there hadn’t been any contact. But obviously it was in my mind.

“I just bumped into Kenny. I went up and spoke to him and he brought it up. That was how it worked out.”

This shows not only that Miller did not hold a grudge towards Rangers, but also that Defoe has been considering this move for a while.

With months following on Bournemouth’s bench to think it over, Defoe did not waste any time in January to make his move.

He joined up with the Rangers squad this week in Tenerife on their mid-season training camp.
