Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has told The Shields Gazette that his teammate Jan Kirchhoff is a top player.

Kirchhoff has been on the books of Sunderland since January 2016 when he joined them from Bayern Munich.

According to a report in The Daily Mail at the time, the Premier League club had to pay German giants Bayern a transfer fee in the region of £750,000 in order to secure the services of the 25-year-old, who can play as a centre-back or as a defensive midfielder.

Defoe has praised Kirchhoff, and the Sunderland striker has also spoken highly of his teammate Lee Cattermole.

The 28-year-old defensive midfielder joined the Black Cats back in 2009 and has established himself as a key player for the club.

“We need the experience – you can’t buy that,” Defoe told The Shields Gazette. “Catts has played in the Premier League for 10 years and he brings aggression to the team. Jan (Kirchhoff) is a top player. You need that experience.”

Sunderland are struggling at the moment and are in danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

The Black Cats are second from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment with just a single point from four matches.

David Moyes’s side will return to action on Sunday evening when they take on Tottenham Hotspur away from home at White Hart Lane in the league.
