Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has told BBC Sport (17:20) that he was devastated with his side’s defeat to Crystal Palace at the weekend.

The Black Cats suffered a 3-2 defeat to Palace at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

David Moyes’s side looked set for a win, as they were 2-0 up after 60 minutes thanks to a double from Defoe.

However, Palace staged a successful comeback thereafter and scored three goals to pick up all three points.

Christian Benteke, who joined the Eagles from Premier League rivals Liverpool in the summer transfer window, scored the winner in the fourth minute of injury time.

Defoe has said that he was devastated with the final result at the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon.

“I’m devastated,” Defoe told BBC Sport after the match (17:20). “When you are 2-0 up at home you have to see the game out and win it, simple as that.”

“Benteke’s goal at the end is something we have worked on in training – we’re disappointed,” added the striker.

The defeat to Palace means that Sunderland are at the foot of the Premier League table at the moment with just a point from six matches.

The Black Cats are in serious danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

Having gone 2-0 up against Palace, Moyes’s side should have picked up all three points.

The defeat to the Eagles underlines just how much work Sunderland have to do defensively.
