Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers look like having another trophy-less season.

Jermain Defoe of Rangers salutes the travelling fans after the Ladbrokes Premiership match between Hibernian and Rangers at Easter Road on March 08, 2019 in Edinburgh, United Kingdom.

Rangers hitman Jermain Defoe has told the club’s official website it is imperative that his team-mates don’t believe that their season is now over.

Steven Gerrard’s side were dumped out of the Scottish Cup in last night’s 2-0 defeat to Aberdeen at Ibrox.

Victory would have seen Rangers face Celtic in the semi-final, with the Hoops already eight points clear of the Gers in the Scottish Premiership.

Barring a huge turnaround, it looks like the light Blues might be ending the season without a trophy, but Defoe has encouraged his team-mates not to adopt this mentality.

He told Rangers’ official website: “The next few days are going to be difficult to get over that but I think first and foremost we need to stick together as a group.

“That’s important, we need to stick together, try and forget the result and focus on the league. Anything can happen. All we can do is focus on ourselves and try and win football matches and then we go from there.

“It’s important we don’t have the mentality where you feel like the season’s over.”

Defoe is right. Anything can happen, especially with Celtic in quite an uncertain period following the exit of Brendan Rodgers earlier this month, but eight points is still a hell of a deficit to make up at this stage of the season.

The 36-year-old hasn’t had the devastating impact on Scottish football that a lot of people thought when Rangers signed him on loan from Bournemouth in January.

He has still netted five times in 11 games, which is a very decent return, but Gerrard has really needed him in the Scottish Cup and he hasn’t scored in any of his three games in this competition.

Jermain Defoe of Rangers scores the fourth goal during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premier League match between Rangers and Dundee at Ibrox Stadium on February 27, 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland.
