Jermain Defoe has reportedly signed a loan deal with Rangers where he will link up with former teammate Steven Gerrard.

Jermain Defoe previously waxed-lyrical about Steven Gerrard becoming Rangers boss by stating ‘he will become a top, top manager’.

Sky Sports reported on Thursday that Bournemouth have agreed to the 36-year-old signing for Rangers on an 18-month deal.

It is said that the Premier League club have two recall options in Defoe’s contract – this summer and in January 2020 as he set to reunite with his former England teammate.

Former Liverpool midfielder Gerrard, who is in his first managerial job, landed the Ibrox gig in the summer and this is what Defoe had to say about that move when it was first announced.

“What a guy,” Defoe told Sky Sports in May as they rebroadcasted his comments on 03/01/2019 at 4:35 pm. “You can talk about Stevie forever. Icon, great player and Liverpool legend.

“When I heard the news [of him becoming Rangers boss], I just wanted to wish him the best. to be honest. Away from football, he is such a nice guy. Loved playing with him.

“One of the best players I have ever played with. Without being biased, he will go on to be a top, top manager. With his experience and just how he is as a person. Cool, calm and collected. He never feels the pressure. He loves the pressure.”

During his time in the Premier League, Defoe made 496 appearances for the likes of West Ham, Portsmouth and Tottenham, scoring a mammoth 163 goals in the process.

Defoe and Gerrard never shared the same dressing rooms on a club level, but they were regular teammates for their national side.

Now, the former England duo will be hoping to help Rangers lift the Scottish Premiership title as they are currently level on points with their Old Firm rivals.

Prior to Scotland taking a winter break, the Gers inflicted a 1-0 defeat on Celtic at Ibrox, with Brendan Rodgers side currently sitting top of the table with a game in hand.
