Sunderland were beaten 3-2 by Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has insisted to the club’s official website that there were positives to take from the weekend loss to Crystal Palace.

The Black Cats have endured a disastrous start to the season once again this year, failing to pick up a win in any of their six games so far.

Five of their league games have led to defeats, with the latest coming against Alan Pardew’s side on Saturday.

The loss was arguably their worst to date as the Black Cats surrendered a two-goal lead with some slack defending to say the least.

There were plenty of negatives for Sunderland manager David Moyes and his team but Defoe insists that there were plenty of positives, too.

“There were a lot of positives to take from the game,” he told the club’s official website.

“The amount of chances we created and our energy levels, and we put more crosses into the box which is what the manager wanted. It’s not often you score two goals and come away a little bit down but we just have to keep going.”

If Sunderland are to turn things around there is no denying that a vast improvement defensively is needed.

More specifically, they are going to have to find a way to limit the number of chances they are handing to their opponents.

So far they have given away an average of 18.8 attempts away to their opponents, the second most of any team behind Hull City.

That is a worrying statistic and if they cannot improve then Palace will not be the final team to come back against them this season.
