Glasgow Rangers were linked with bringing Jermain Defoe to Ibrox this summer, but it appears that a move is not going to happen.

In comments reported by ITV, Jermain Defoe has suggested that he will not be heading to Rangers this summer amid reports earlier in the window that Steven Gerrard was looking to bring the Premier League striker to Ibrox.

It has been an extremely busy summer for the Gers, with a number of exciting signings brought in as they look to end Celtic’s dominance in the Scottish Premiership. And one of the players reportedly on Gerrard’s radar has been Defoe.

The Scottish Sun reported in May that Rangers wanted to sign the Bournemouth striker – who earns £65,000-a-week at the Vitality Stadium – on loan for the coming campaign and Eddie Howe could give the move the green light.

Of course, with the Cherries’ window nearing its conclusion, it would be a major surprise if Defoe ended up heading to Ibrox with little time left for a replacement to be found. And the former England striker has now suggested that there is virtually no chance of a move to Scotland this summer.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is seen during the Pre-Season Friendly match between Rangers and Wigan Athletic at Ibrox Stadium on July 29, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“I saw some of that, but again, that’s just something I’ve always had,” he said, as reported by ITV. “Even when I’ve been at clubs and played every game, you’ll always find something, especially with social media now.

“I’ve played with Steven Gerrard and we’ve got the same agent. I’m just like everyone else, you see things on Twitter and in the papers, but that’s it really.”

It would have been an incredible deal had Rangers managed to land Defoe. The Gers have got little wrong in the market it seems, but Gerrard arguably still needs to add to his striker options before the deadline.

Defoe has been lethal at almost every club he has played for and it seems fair to say that Alfredo Morelos would have found it near on impossible not to take his game to a completely different level if he was working alongside the 35-year-old for a year.
